Genres

Genres are everywhere—dozens upon dozens of them. From the broad and familiar, like pop, to the highly specific, like surf rock, every song lives in at least one genre and often overlaps with several more. There's no strict hierarchy tying them together, but there is a natural sense of flow between styles. Let's take a look at what the data reveals about which groupings visit the most places, have the most songs, and overall rule.

This view groups genres into general "parents". Each vertical represents a specific type of music, and the radius of the bubble represents the number of places that sub-genre has been, relative to it's parent.
The actual groupings are mostly arbitrary and my own makings, but they should make sense. I've limited this to the top 7 of each genre to keep the visual readable.
The colors don't represent anything specific, just a decreasing band of shades.
